One winter day, all covered with snow,
There were two visitors in the deep valley of Kangwon Mountain,
One was a grey-haired American gentleman, with him was a young Korean man.
Two of them went through the deep snow into the valley, came to a grave covered with snow.

“Your mother is buried here.”
The grey-haired gentleman said to the youth, recalling the past many years ago.

One American soldier was retreating in the valley of Kangwon Mountain,
Heard a sound from somewhere.
It was a baby crying somewhere nearby, he followed the sound coming from under the snow.
The American soldier began to dig into the snow, shocked to find a woman, completely naked.

The Korean mother who was running away,
Found herself trapped in the valley of Kangwon Mountain.
To save her baby child, she took her clothes off,
Covered the baby with her clothes, and herself froze to death.

The American soldier touched by the tragedy,
Dug a hole in the frozen ground and buried the mother.
He took the crying baby with him, and brought him up as his son.

When the baby grew up to be a youth, the father told him about his past,
Brought the son to his mother’s grave.

After hearing about his mother, the youth knelt in front of the grave,
All covered with snow as before.

The youth clothed his mother’s grave, completely with his own clothes,

“Mother, how cold were you on that day!”

눈이 수북이 쌓이도록 내린 어느 겨울날, 강원도 깊은 골짜기를 두 사람이 찾았습니다.
나이가 지긋한 한 사람은 미국 사람이었고, 젊은 청년은 한국 사람이었습니다.

눈 속에 빠져가며 한참 골짜기를 더듬어 들어간 두 사람은 마침내 한 무덤 앞에 섰습니다.

" 이곳이 네 어머니가 묻힌 곳이란다."
나이 많은 미국인이 청년에게 말하며 깊은 상념에 빠졌습니다.

한 미국 병사가 강원도 깊은 골짜기로 후퇴를 하고 있었는데, 무슨 이상한 소리가 들려왔습니다.
가만 들어보니 그것은 아이 울음소리였습니다.
소리를 따라가 보니 그 소리는 눈구덩이 속에서 들려오고 있었습니다.

아이를 눈에서 꺼내기 위해 눈을 치우던 미국병사는 소스라쳐 놀라고 말았습니다.
눈속에 여인이 파묻혀 있었는데 옷을 하나도 걸치지 않은 알몸이었던 것입니다.

피난을 가던 어머니가 깊은 골짜기에 갇히게 되자,
아이를 살리기 위해 자기가 입고 있던 옷을 모두 벗어 아이를 감싸곤
아이를 끌어 않은 채 얼어 죽고만 것이었습니다.

그 비극에 감동한 미군병사는 언 땅을 파 어머니를 묻고,
어머니 품에서 울어대던 갓난 아이를 데리고 가 자기의 아들로 키웠습니다.

아이가 자라 청년이 되자 그는 지난 날 있었던 일들을 다 이야기해 주고,
그때 언 땅에 묻었던 청년 어머니의 무덤을 찾아온 것이었습니다.

이야기를 들은 청년은 그때처럼 눈이 수북이 쌓인 무덤 앞에 무릎을 꿇었습니다.

그의 눈에선 눈물이 하염없이 흘러 땅에 떨어져 흰 눈을 녹이고 있었습니다.
잠시 후 청년은 일어섰습니다.

그러더니 입고 있던 옷을 하나씩 벗기 시작했습니다.
마침내 그는 알몸이 되었습니다.
그리고 청년은 무덤 위에 쌓인 눈을 두 손으로 정성스레 모두 치워냈습니다.
그런 뒤 청년은 자기가 벗은 옷으로 무덤을 덮어가기 시작했습니다.
마치 어머니께 옷을 입혀 드리듯 말입니다.

청년은 마침내 어머니의 무덤을 자신의 옷으로 모두 덮었습니다.
그리고는 무덤 위에 쓰러져 울부짖었습니다.

" 어머니, 그 날 얼마나 추우셨어요"
